Ahrefs vs Rankveo
We ran the same keywords through the Ahrefs API and through rankveo on the same day, then checked both against live Google. Ahrefs is a serious tool and this page says where it beats us. It also shows the thing an index cannot do: see a site that ranks today but was not in the last crawl.

Where the two differ
Every Ahrefs cell below describes what its API returned in our test on August 27, 2026. Every rankveo cell is something you can check in a trial the same day.
| Capability | Ahrefs | Rankveo | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rank tracking | From a keyword index | Runs the search live | An index rebuilds on a crawl schedule. We perform the query and read the page. |
| A site launched this year | 0 keywords found | Saw #1 the same day | Tested on rankveo.com, which was ranking first for its own name that day. |
| Search volume | One modeled number | Two sources, labeled | Ad-platform volume and clickstream volume shown separately, because they disagree. |
| Missing data | Not distinguished | Shown as no data | A gap in a provider's coverage is never rendered as a zero. |
| AI answer citations | Not in the API we tested | Tracked per engine | ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews checked on a schedule for your prompts. |
| Topic clustering | Parent topic | Ours, checked live | Matched Ahrefs' own labels on 10 of 12 keywords, with live results settling merges. |
| Writing and publishing | Not included | Built in | Drafting, scheduling, and publishing to your CMS from the same workspace. |
Ahrefs said we rank for nothing. We were #1.
On the day of this test, rankveo.com ranked first in Google for its own name. The Ahrefs API reported zero keywords for the domain. This is not a defect in their product — it is what an index is. A keyword database rebuilds on a crawl schedule, and a site launched this year is not in it yet.
Who this matters to: anyone whose site is younger than the crawl. A new site, a new section, a fresh domain after a rebrand — an index-based tracker reports nothing, and you believe it, because it came from an expensive tool.
One number, or the numbers behind it
Google publishes real search volume to nobody, so every figure here is a model. Ahrefs gives you its single modeled number. Rankveo shows you the ad-platform figure and the clickstream figure separately, because when two models disagree by 3× that gap is information you should see, not something to average away.
| Keyword | Ahrefs | Rankveo · ad platform | Rankveo · clickstream |
|---|---|---|---|
| generative engine optimization | 8,000 | 4,400 | 11,271 |
| answer engine optimization | 5,000 | 2,400 | 4,590 |
| ai visibility | 3,300 | 720 | 714 |
| llm seo | 1,400 | 880 | 1,326 |
| keyword research | 827,000 | 368,000 | 10,557 |
| backlink checker | 636,000 | no data | 33,456 |
Look at the last row. One source has no figure at all for backlink checker. Rankveo prints that as no data. A tool that prints it as a zero is telling you a 636,000-search keyword has no demand.
Mostly agreement, and one expensive exception
Eleven of these twelve keywords land within ten points of each other — difficulty scoring is largely settled. The exception is the one that mattered: on ai seo tool, Ahrefs said 56 and rankveo said 10. We ran the search. Page one was small independent sites, which is what a 10 predicts. By Ahrefs' own data, that first-place page is worth roughly 14,000 visits a month.
| Keyword | Ahrefs | Rankveo | Spread |
|---|---|---|---|
| keyword research | 95 | 88 | 7 pts |
| backlink checker | 91 | 82 | 9 pts |
| rank tracker | 80 | 88 | 8 pts |
| seo tools | 76 | 66 | 10 pts |
| generative engine optimization | 65 | 54 | 11 pts |
| ai seo tool | 56 | 10 | 46 pts |
| ai seo | 50 | 52 | 2 pts |
| answer engine optimization | 40 | 36 | 4 pts |
| ai visibility | 26 | 26 | match |
| chatgpt seo | 13 | 18 | 5 pts |
| semrush alternative | 11 | 0 | 11 pts |
| llm seo | 0 | 8 | 8 pts |
The cost of one score: a difficulty of 56 tells a small site to skip the keyword. Running the actual search costs a fifth of a cent and settles it. That is the argument for checking a model against reality before you plan around it.
Three reasons to buy Ahrefs instead
A comparison page that claims a clean sweep is marketing. These are real advantages, and if any of them is central to your work you should buy their product.
-
A backlink index at a scale we do not attempt
Ahrefs runs its own web crawler and has for years. If link building is the centre of your work, that index is the reason to buy it.
-
Fifteen years of history
Their data showed us first-seen dates going back to 2015 on keywords we care about. A young product cannot manufacture that, and we will not pretend otherwise.
-
Traffic potential, precomputed
For any keyword they can tell you what the top-ranking page earns in total. We derive the same figure on demand rather than shipping it on every row.
Built for the search results that answer, not just rank
Every keyword in this test triggers an AI Overview. Ranking is now half the job — the other half is whether the answer engines cite you, and whether you can publish fast enough to be the page they cite.
-
Rankings from a real search
We run the query and read the page, so a site launched last week gets a true position on day one instead of the zero an index returns.
-
Every number labeled by source
Measured, estimated, and judged stay separate. You always know whether you are looking at a fact or a model.
-
AI answers beside your rankings
Every keyword in this test triggers an AI Overview. We check whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers cite you — not just where you rank.
-
From keyword to published article
Clustering, drafting, scheduling, and publishing to your CMS in one workspace, instead of exporting a keyword list into someone else's tool.
How we ran this
What we ran
Sixteen keywords through the Ahrefs API and through rankveo on August 27, 2026: keyword overview, suggestions, ranked keywords, and domain metrics. Seven live Google searches, United States, desktop, top 100 results, as the reference point.
Where our numbers come from
Rankveo's keyword and backlink data comes from a commercial data provider, the same way most tools source theirs. Rankings come from live searches we run, and clustering and intent are generated by our own models and checked against real results.
What this is not
A single-day, single-market, sixteen-keyword sample — not an exhaustive audit. The Ahrefs figures come from its API on a Lite plan, which is keyword data only; their web app includes tools this test did not touch.
Who ran it
We did, and we sell the competing product, so treat the framing as ours and the numbers as checkable. Every figure comes from an API response or a live search you can repeat today.
Run your domain through both and compare
Live rankings, both volume sources labeled, and AI answer tracking beside your positions.
